MAP OF THE DIOCESE OF CAITHNESS.

Diocese of Caithness.

The Diocese was always co-terminous with the ancient Earldom and is shown by the area enclosed by the red dotted line, i.e. north of the River Oykel.  The names underlined in red are of Viking origin whilst most others can be traced to Gallo-Pictish origins.

This map is of particular interest since it shows clearly the lands which Joanna of Sutherland gave to the Cathedral of Moray and which later came into the family of le Chen after 1269 - shown shaded in red hatching.

There is a larger version of this map (2.5Mb GIF file) and we will gladly supply it. Just send us an e-mail.
